For plug-ins or applications that require a commercial license, only those listed on the price list are available. Any custom or non-commercial plug-in be simply loaded from your own storage.
Built-in Shotgun and FTrack support are planned and coming soon.
Yes, Athera provides a system called “init scripts” which allows you to completely customize the application’s host environment before it’s launched. This allows you to configure environment variables, folders, and custom tools and plugins for the application being launched.
You will need a ping of between 80ms to 40ms to the nearest Google Cloud Platform data center where Athera is deployed to have a production-grade experience. You can do this by browsing http://www.gcping.com/ and checking your ping to us-west1 or eu-west1, the two regions where Athera is currently deployed (more regions are being deployed over time).
You will also need a sufficiently fast internet connection to stream your remote desktop. Typically, 5 to 10 megabits per second are required per remote desktop session.
Athera’s dashboard is web-based, and acts as your control panel for configuring projects, storage, purchasing entitlements, viewing usage reports, and launching apps. Applications themselves can be accessed using a variety of remote desktop technologies.
We currently support noVNC in most web browsers, as well as TurboVNC for a more desktop-like experience. We also plan support for Teradici in the future.
Yes, you can use a tool called “Orbit Sync” to designate a local folder on your desktop and a corresponding folder within an Athera project to be synchronized.
With Athera, you bring your own cloud storage and connect it just like an NFS mount into the shared file system of your virtual studio. You always maintain control over your cloud storage, so you can access your files outside of Athera and can disconnect it at any time.
Athera supports connecting a Dropbox, Google Drive, or Amazon S3 bucket. For best performance, we strongly recommend creating a Google Cloud Storage bucket. Athera provides a high-speed cache of frequently accessed files for snappy performance from your cloud workstations.
Rendering is also an entitlement, can be purchased in blocks of time (typically in 1 hour increments), and is metered by the node-minute. Rendering entitlements work like gas in a car: you buy it ahead of time, use as much or as little as you need, and buy more when you run out.
You can purchase access to software (called an entitlement) for short periods of time (typically 30 days). An entitlement allows anyone in your virtual studio to use the software non-concurrently. Entitlements have a “fair use” limit (typically 200 hours) which is the maximum number of hours that the cloud workstation can be open during the allotted period.
Each entitlement is for a single application, and each application runs on its own separate virtual workstation. Entitlements are purchased by the owner of a virtual studio (called an org) using a credit card, and are immediately ready for use.
Athera is aimed primarily at freelancers and small studios that need flexibility and power without the up-front capital costs of traditional studio infrastructure. With Athera, you can execute projects with the software and people you want, without the burden of long-term commitments to licenses or hardware. Athera is for anyone who wants to win work based on their talent, not the size of their studio.
Athera provides the infrastructure required for running a visual effects studio entirely in the cloud. This includes tools to manage people, projects, software, storage, and rendering. Athera is accessible from a web browser, so you can work from anywhere. Because Athera is wholly in the cloud, you can work with collaborators located anywhere in the world.
No, only the designated version of each application is available. These are updated in close step with the corresponding desktop releases.
No. Because Athera abstracts the concept of licensing, traditional desktop licenses are not compatible.
Athera is designed to be secure from the ground-up and has undergone a comprehensive independent cyber-security audit. If you have specific security questions related to the needs of your studio, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Athera organizes your people and projects in the cloud. It allows you to create a virtual studio, manage projects, and invite collaborators from anywhere in the world. The platform provides software that runs on powerful workstations in the cloud.
You can purchase access to a variety of popular VFX applications for short periods of time (typically 30 days) which can be started in the cloud on-demand, and accessed via your web browser.
Athera also provides a high-speed filesystem to organize your cloud storage. You can connect a Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Cloud Storage, or an Amazon S3 bucket to Athera, just like an NFS mount.
Athera also provides on-demand rendering power in the cloud without the hassle of moving files. With Athera, render nodes are reliable because they work on the data in-place, and assume the identity and permission set of the user that launched the job.
Yes. Athera provides a powerful web-based API. For more info, please consult the documentation at docs.athera.io
